The Tupolev Tu-144 was the Soviet Union’s pioneering supersonic jet it required a highly complex and fast-paced landing sequence due to its slender delta-wing design and lack of traditional horizontal stabilizers. Because of these aerodynamic traits, the Tu-144 had a high landing speed of 196–207 mph (170–180 knots). A total of 17 Tupolev Tu-144 aircraft were manufactured, including one prototype, two production test versions, and 14 production aircraft. However, only 16 of these were ever completed and flown, as the 17th aircraft remained unfinished at the Voronezh factory before being scrapped.
