The Sikorsky H-19 Chickasaw (company designation S-55) was a pioneering American multi-purpose utility helicopter introduced in 1950. It holds the historic distinction of being the U.S. Army's first true transport helicopter, fundamentally shaping early military doctrine regarding air mobility and battlefield troop transport. It was used heavily during the Korean War by all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces, primarily for cargo transport, rescue, and medical evacuation. A total of 1,728 Sikorsky H-19 Chickasaw (S-55) helicopters were built worldwide.
