The Fokker F27 Friendship is a highly successful Dutch twin-turboprop regional airliner manufactured by the aerospace company Fokker. Designed in the early 1950s to replace aging, unpressurized, piston-engine aircraft like the Douglas DC-3, the F27 first flew on November 24, 1955, and entered commercial service in 1958. Known for its reliability, high-wing configuration, and comfortable, pressurized cabin, the F27 became one of the most populous and successful European-built airliners of its era. Piedmont Airlines operated a fleet of 8 Fairchild F-27s (the US-built variant of the Fokker F27) starting in 1958, and later transitioned to operating 9 Fairchild Hiller FH-227Bs (the stretched variant) beginning in 1966.
