The Lockheed F-117 Nighthawk is the world’s first operational aircraft designed entirely around low-observable stealth technology. Developed by Lockheed Martin's secretive Skunk Works division under the "Senior Trend" code name, it entered service in 1983 amid total government secrecy and revolutionized modern aerial warfare. Though officially retired from combat in 2008, a small fleet remains highly active for secret training and data collection. 64 Lockheed F-117 Nighthawk aircraft were built. This total includes five YF-117A prototype/development airframes and 59 serial production F-117A operational aircraft, manufactured by the Lockheed Corporation between 1981 and 1990.
