The Granville Gee Bee Model R Super Sportster was a highly specialized, iconic racing aircraft built by Granville Brothers Aircraft of Springfield, Massachusetts during the Golden Age of Flight. Unmistakable for its barrel-shaped fuselage and teardrop profile, it was engineered with one singular purpose: raw speed. While it achieved legendary racing milestones, its demanding flight characteristics also earned it a reputation as a highly dangerous machine. The Granville Brothers built exactly two original Gee Bee Model R Super Sportsters: one R-1 (which famously won the 1932 Thompson Trophy) and one R-2.Because both original planes were destroyed in crashes in the 1930s, no original Model Rs survive today.
