The Flying Tiger Line, also known simply as Flying Tigers, was the very first scheduled cargo airline in the United States. Founded on June 25, 1945, by Robert William Prescott and nine other former pilots from the famous World War II "Flying Tigers" fighter unit, it grew to become the largest cargo airline in the world before being bought by Federal Express (FedEx) in 1989. The Flying Tigers Boeing 747-132SF was a unique fleet of early-model Boeing 747-100 aircraft converted from passenger liners into heavy-duty cargo freighters. These iconic aircraft formed the backbone of the Flying Tiger Line's global shipping network during the late 1970s and 1980s.
