The Fiat G.55 Centauro was a highly advanced single-engine, single-seat Italian fighter aircraft produced by Fiat Aviazione during World War II. Widely considered by aviation historians and combat pilots to be the best Italian fighter of the war, it even earned high praise from the German Luftwaffe, which declared it the "best Axis fighter" after rigorous comparative testing in early 1943. Despite its exceptional handling, speed, and heavy armament, the G.55 arrived too late and was built in numbers far too few to change the outcome of the conflict. 274 units of the Fiat G.55 Centauro were built during World War II.
