The Curtiss C-46 Commando is a massive, twin-engine military transport aircraft developed from the Curtiss CW-20 commercial airliner design. Introduced in 1942 by the Curtiss-Wright Corporation, it became the largest and heaviest twin-engine cargo aircraft used by the Allied forces during World War II. Known affectionately as "The Whale", it could carry twice the payload of its famous rival, the Douglas C-47 Skytrain, making it an invaluable logistics workhorse. A total of 3,181 Curtiss C-46 Commando aircraft were built between 1940 and 1945. Primarily developed by Curtiss-Wright as a military transport during World War II, it was heavily utilized by the U.S. Army Air Forces, Navy, and Marine Corps (where it was known as the R5C).
