The Douglas A-1J Skyraider represents the final production variant of the legendary piston-engine attack aircraft family. Developed originally for the U.S. Navy as the AD-7, it was later designated the A-1J under the unified 1962 tri-service naming system. This rugged "piston powerhouse" excelled in low-and-slow close air support (CAS) and Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR) escort missions during the Vietnam War, operating seamlessly alongside jet aircraft. The A-1J (originally designated as the AD-7) was the final production version of the aircraft. Out of the 3,180 total Skyraiders manufactured, exactly 72 A-1J (AD-7) aircraft were built before production ended in February 1957.
