The Douglas A-1 Skyraider (originally designated as the AD Skyraider) is a legendary American single-seat piston-engine attack aircraft. Designed by Ed Heinemann during World War II, it entered service in 1946 and carved out an unusually long, successful career stretching into the early 1980s. It became famously known as an "anachronism" for remaining a frontline propeller-driven powerhouse well into the Jet Age. Â A total of 3,180 Douglas Skyraiders were built between 1945 and 1957. Production spanned 12 years and included eight major models and over 37 different versions. These versatile aircraft served in the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force, as well as with several foreign air forces, remaining in service until 1985.
