The Vickers Viscount was a revolutionary British medium-range airliner that holds the distinction of being the world’s first turboprop-powered aircraft to enter commercial passenger service. Developed by Vickers-Armstrongs in response to postwar specifications from the UK’s Brabazon Committee, it made its first flight on July 16, 1948, and entered commercial service on April 18, 1953.The aircraft was highly praised for its passenger comfort, quiet cabin, and lack of vibration compared to the piston-engined airliners of its era. It became one of Britain's most successful postwar commercial aircraft, with a total of 445 units built between 1948 and 1963. British Airways (BA) and its predecessor, British European Airways (BEA), operated a total of 37 Vickers Viscount turboprops.Â
