The Yakovlev Yak-28 was a swept-wing, twin-engine combat aircraft used by the Soviet Union during the Cold War. First flying as the Yak-129 prototype on March 5, 1958, it became the only mass-produced Soviet bomber to routinely reach supersonic speeds in regular flight. Despite its striking looks, it was known for being a fast but highly complex and sometimes terrifying aircraft to operate. A total of 1,180 Yakovlev Yak-28 aircraft were built across all variants. Production of this twin-jet Soviet combat aircraft ran from the late 1950s through the 1970s, covering multiple operational roles including tactical bombers, interceptors, and reconnaissance planes.
