The Tupolev Tu-22M (NATO reporting name: Backfire) is a Soviet-era supersonic, variable-sweep wing, long-range strategic and maritime strike bomber. Developed by the Tupolev Design Bureau in the late 1960s, it serves as a cornerstone of the Russian Aerospace Forces' long-range aviation inventory. A total of 497 Tupolev Tu-22M aircraft were built across all variants before production concluded in 1993. This figure includes all pre-production aircraft and various versions, such as the initial Tu-22M1, the Tu-22M2, and the upgraded Tu-22M3.
