The Lavochkin La-5 was a highly successful Soviet fighter aircraft of World War II that served as a critical turning point for the Soviet Air Force (VVS) in its struggle for air superiority against the German Luftwaffe. Developed by Semyon Lavochkin, the aircraft performed its maiden flight in March 1942 and entered mass frontline service later that year. It radically transformed Soviet capabilities on the Eastern Front by matching or outperforming contemporary German fighters like the Messerschmitt Bf 109 and Focke-Wulf Fw 190 at low to medium altitudes. A total of 9,920 Lavochkin La-5 fighter aircraft of all variants were built between 1942 and 1944.
