Delta Air Lines officially ushered in the jet age on September 18, 1959, by becoming the joint launch customer for the Douglas DC-8. Capable of cruising at 590 mph, the iconic narrow-body jet revolutionized travel by drastically reducing cross-country flight times. Today, the airline preserves one of these historic aircraft at the Delta Flight Museum in Atlanta. Delta Air Lines operated a total of 42 Douglas DC-8 aircraft throughout their history, specifically featuring variants like the DC-8-11, -12, -33, -51, -61, and -71. They flew the type from September 18, 1959, until their final DC-8 retirement on May 1, 1989. .
