The Convair 990 Coronado was an American narrow-body, four-engine jet airliner produced between 1961 and 1963 by the Convair division of General Dynamics. Designed to be the fastest subsonic commercial airliner in the world, it regularly cruised at speeds up to Mach 0.89 (approx. 620 mph / 1,000 km/h), outlasting the speed capabilities of contemporary rivals like the Boeing 707 and Douglas DC-8. Despite its incredible velocity, the aircraft was a notable commercial failure, with only 37 units ever produced due to its poor fuel economy and limited passenger capacity. American Airlines operated 20 Convair 990 Coronado's.
