Alitalia was founded on September 16, 1946, as Aerolinee Italiane Internazionali, launching its first commercial flight on May 5, 1947. As Italy's iconic flag carrier, it grew into a symbol of national style and global reach before shutting down on October 15, 2021, and handing operations over to ITA Airways. Alitalia operated a fleet of eight McDonnell Douglas DC-10-30 widebody trijets between 1973 and 1986. The aircraft served as a primary backbone for the Italian flag carrier's intercontinental routes, connecting Rome to destinations across the Americas, Africa, and Asia before the airline consolidated its long-haul operations.
