The Airbus A320 served as a major workhorse for the former Italian flag carrier Alitalia, operating short- and medium-haul European and domestic routes until the airline ceased operations on October 15, 2021. Following Alitalia's shutdown, its entire fleet and operational assets were transferred to the newly formed state-owned carrier, ITA Airways, which continues to operate these exact aircraft today. Established on September 16, 1946, as Aerolinee Italiane Internazionali, Alitalia grew to become Italy’s iconic national flag carrier. Operating its first commercial flight on May 5, 1947, the airline symbolized Italian style worldwide before facing decades of financial turbulence and finally ceasing operations in October 2021.
