The DC-8 Super 70 series represents the ultimate and final evolution of the Douglas DC-8, created through one of the most successful re-engining retrofit programs in commercial aviation history. Triggered by strict international noise regulations in the 1970s, the program saved the aging narrow-body jetliner from forced retirement by swapping its original loud, fuel-thirsty engines for modern turbofans. This dramatic upgrade effectively granted the aircraft a "second life," allowing it to operate efficiently well into the 21st century, primarily as a heavy cargo freighter. 44 Douglas DC-8 cargo aircraft (primarily Super 70 series like the DC-8-71F) at its peak before retiring the entire fleet in May 2009. Over the course of its operations, UPS once owned 49 DC-8 airframes total, selling five before the final retirement.
