The Vickers Valiant was a British high-altitude jet bomber that served as the first operational aircraft of the Royal Air Force's (RAF) celebrated "V bomber" tripartite fleet. Introduced in 1955, it was engineered by Vickers-Armstrongs to carry the United Kingdom's newly developed atomic weapons, effectively initiating Britain’s airborne nuclear deterrent force during the early years of the Cold War. Though frequently overshadowed by its more radical and futuristic fleet siblings—the Avro Vulcan and the Handley Page Victor—the Valiant was arguably the most practical, conventional, and timely answer to the Ministry of Supply's urgent requirements. A total of 107 Vickers Valiants were built (including all prototypes and variants).
