Air India was founded in 1932 by J.R.D. Tata as Tata Airlines, marking the birth of commercial aviation in India. The company transitioned from a small domestic mail carrier into a luxurious global icon, went through decades of state-owned management, and was ultimately reprivatized by the Tata Group in 2022. Air India operated a total of 27 Boeing 747 aircraft throughout its history, beginning with its first delivery in 1971 until the final four jumbo jets were sold in April 2024.
