The Yakovlev Yak-40 is a small, Soviet-designed three-engine regional jet airliner. Developed by the Yakovlev Design Bureau in the mid-1960s, it achieved its maiden flight in 1966 and entered commercial service with Aeroflot in 1968. It holds a distinct place in aviation history as the world's first jet-powered commuter aircraft, preceding modern western regional jets by nearly three decades. A total of 1,011 (with some sources citing 1,013) Yakovlev Yak-40 aircraft were built between 1967 and 1981 at the Saratov Aviation Plant in the former Soviet Union.
