The Boeing 747SP, meaning "Special Performance", is a unique and significant variant of the iconic Boeing 747 wide-body airliner. It was developed in the 1970s in response to a request from Pan Am for an aircraft capable of flying non-stop on exceptionally long routes, like from New York to Tehran. It's a shortened version of the standard 747-100, 47 feet shorter, which allows it to carry fewer passengers but fly farther and higher. It has a taller tail and horizontal stabilizer, along with other design changes to enhance its performance for long-range flights. A total of 45 Boeing 747SPs were built. The aircraft was developed by Boeing and entered service in 1976 with Pan Am.
