The North American F-100 Super Sabre, nicknamed the "Hun" by its pilots, was a supersonic jet fighter aircraft developed by North American Aviation as a successor to the F-86 Sabre. The F-100 served extensively in the Vietnam War, initially as a fighter-bomber in ground support missions. While it was originally envisioned as an air superiority fighter, the F-4 Phantom II eventually took on that role, and the F-100 became primarily known for close air support. A total of 2,294 North American F-100 Super Sabres were built. Production of the F-100 took place between 1953 and 1959.Â
