The Lockheed P-3 Orion is a four-engine, turboprop maritime patrol and reconnaissance aircraft developed for the United States Navy. Introduced in 1962, it has served as a premier anti-submarine warfare (ASW) platform for over 60 years. The aircraft was adapted from the Lockheed L-188 Electra commercial airliner. It features a highly recognizable tail stinger, known as a Magnetic Anomaly Detector (MAD) boom, which is used to detect the metallic hulls of hidden submarines. A total of 757 Lockheed P-3 Orion aircraft were built between 1961 and 1990.
