The Grumman S-2 Tracker (originally called the S2F) was the first purpose-built, single-airframe anti-submarine warfare (ASW) aircraft to enter service with the United States Navy. Introduced in February 1954, it changed naval aviation by packing both submarine detection ("hunting") and attack ("killing") gear into one twin-engine plane. Before the Tracker, the Navy had to use two different planes working as a team to find and destroy submarines. 1,284 Grumman S-2 Tracker aircraft were built. This total includes 1,185 aircraft produced by Grumman in the United States and 99 built under license in Canada by de Havilland Canada.
