The Grumman F4F Wildcat was the primary carrier-based fighter aircraft operated by the United States Navy and Marine Corps during the first half of World War II. Famously stubby and heavily built, the Wildcat bore the brunt of early Pacific carrier battles and successfully "held the line" against formidable Japanese forces until more advanced aircraft arrived. Â A total of 7,860 F4F Wildcat aircraft were built. Grumman originally designed and manufactured the first batches, but the Eastern Aircraft Division of General Motors took over mass production in 1942, manufacturing about three-quarters of the total.
