Originally designed during the Cold War to stop a Soviet tank invasion, it evolved into a highly agile, multirole combat aircraft used for armed reconnaissance, anti-tank warfare, and close air support. 175 Eurocopter EC665 Tiger helicopters have been built. Production of the multi-role attack helicopter by Airbus Helicopters (formerly Eurocopter) began in 1991 and continues.
