The Curtiss SB2C Helldiver was a carrier-based dive bomber developed by Curtiss-Wright and operated primarily by the United States Navy during the latter half of World War II. Introduced to replace the celebrated Douglas SBD Dauntless, the Helldiver was larger, faster, and capable of carrying a much heavier payload. However, its complex development cycle, poor initial handling, and numerous mechanical flaws earned it severe criticism from crews and a series of infamous nicknames, including "The Beast" and "Son of a Bitch, 2nd Class" (a play on its SB2C designation). Despite its rocky start, subsequent modifications transformed it into a highly effective strike platform before advancing aviation technology made dedicated dive bombers obsolete.
