The Avro Shackleton was a British four-engine long-range maritime patrol aircraft developed by Avro for the Royal Air Force (RAF). Introduced in 1951 to counter the growing Soviet submarine threat during the Cold War, it became famously nicknamed "The Growler" due to the deafening noise produced by its powerful engines and contra-rotating propellers. It was the final operational military evolution of the iconic Avro Lancaster bomber design lineage. A total of 185 Avro Shackletons were built between 1951 and 1958. This total includes the prototypes and production aircraft across various marks (such as the MR.1, MR.2, MR.3, and AEW.2) utilized by the Royal Air Force and the South African Air Force.
