The Antonov An-12BK is an upgraded, heavy-duty military variant of the Soviet-designed Antonov An-12 four-engine turboprop transport aircraft. First flown in December 1957, the An-12 family served as the standard medium-range tactical airlifter for the Soviet Air Forces for over three decades, mirroring the operational role of the Western Lockheed C-130 Hercules. Today, surviving An-12BK airframes are highly sought after by aviation spotters for their raw power, noisy engines, and characteristic smoky exhaust plumes during takeoff. A total of 1,248 Antonov An-12 aircraft were built across all variants between 1957 and 1973. The An-12BK was a specific upgraded production model introduced in the late 1960s, featuring more powerful AI-20M engines and a redesigned cargo system.
