Alitalia was the flag carrier and largest airline of Italy. Founded in 1946, it operated for 75 years as an iconic symbol of Italian national pride and international connectivity until it officially ceased operations on October 14, 2021. Alitalia operated a historic fleet of 21 Boeing 747 jumbo jets between 1970 and 2002, consisting of two passenger 747-100s and nineteen 747-200 variants (including passenger, combi, and freighter models). The Italian flag carrier was the second European airline to launch 747 services.
