The Avro Lancaster was a British four-engined heavy bomber that served as the Royal Air Force's (RAF) principal strategic weapon during the second half of World War II. Developed by chief designer Roy Chadwick at A.V. Roe & Company (Avro) to fix the fatal flaws of the twin-engined Avro Manchester, the Lancaster first took flight in January 1941. It quickly proved to be a masterpiece of aeronautical engineering, defined by its massive, un-partitioned 33-foot-long bomb bay and its four iconic Rolls-Royce Merlin engines. A total of 7,377 Lancasters were manufactured across factories on two continents. Today, it remains a sacred icon of Allied aviation history, though only two remain airworthy globally.
